Thanked: 5New Member From New York
Hi all,
My name is Matt and i'm from Brooklyn, NY. I actually got interested in straight razor shaving after seeing an article and video on the art of manliness. I ended up taking the plunge about two months ago, having my first shave new years day with a sight unseen razor from Larry at whipped dog. After a tough start and almost giving up, I've really begun to make strides with my straight! I'm about 40 shaves in and my shaves are just a hare under where my DE shaves were but with none of the irritation! I would like to get into honing eventually, not to restore razors, but just to be able to keep my razor sharp with out having to send it out.
Matt

welcome to SRP mattmaybloom: The fact that you stayed in the game tells me a lot about your perseverance. Get a nice 12k finishing stone and some crox paste and your set for a long time.

Welcome. Just my opinion, but I'd hold off on honing for a while, although 40 shaves with one razor you should be getting to honing territory. If I were you (and I was a year ago), I'd send it out to be honed so you have a new standard AND buy a Naniwa 12k and DMT 325 to lap it. That should keep your edge good for a long time and will ultimately fit into a set of hones for bringing back razors from degrading edges. I'd also be thinking about a 2d razor to use while the first is out of commission being honed.
Just call me Harold

Hi and welcome. A 12k synthetic is the best path to take. As said a second shave ready razor wouldn't go astray either as a benchmark for your touch ups and as a backup. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.

Thanked: 4828Welcome. You are in an area that has access to meets on a regular basis, or at least within driving distance. I would say don't buy anything until you have been to at least one meet. The beauty of being close to so any senior members, mentor and pro honers is you can get to try many edges from many hones and eventually get one that you really like, then at a meet get to know who nd how your razor was honed and go from there. At the meets guys bring all kinds of stuff and you will get tons of exposure.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
