Hi, I'm Chris.
Hi, I'm Chris, I'm from Buffalo, NY (GO BILLS!!!), but have lived in Anchorage, AK for the past 25 years. My girlfriend gave me a basic Dovo 5/8 straight two Xmas's ago. I've shaved with it ever since. I performed my first hone on it this last week with the norton 220/1000, 400/8000 set and my SRD paddle strop and while I do believe I could use a finer finshing stone and some chrome oxide paste, the result was an improvement from it's out of the box ability and what I though was a smooth shave. I am starting to dabble in vintage razors and restoration, having ordered my first project razors from ebay and am acquiring the necessary tools. I do search the thrift shops in Alaska for razors but pickings have been slim. I find myself becoming very passionate about razors, metal working and all shaving parephenalia and its manufacture, and hope to be able to do it all one day. Soaps, strops, brush making, razor restoring and eventually working my way up to forging. I am thankful for and welcome all advice and hope to be able to return all and any favors received someday. Thanks in advance.

Hi Chris & welcome to SRP. It looks like you are familiar with things here, just click on the things at the top of the page. I won't go into too much detail. Also when you click on "Forum" I'm sure you've seen all the selections on the left side. There is so much a knowledge of wealth on here so you will learn a lot. If you click on the large SRP logo on the top left, it will take you to the main page including the Straight Razor Database. Here's something that might be of some help to you since you're into honing now. Some video's of Glen's (gssixgun's) Youtube honing video's:
https://www.youtube.com/user/gssixgun/videos
When you get there, just scroll down & click "load more" & you will see the different video's he has with different honing stones.
Here's Lynn's Youtube video's as well:
https://www.youtube.com/user/LynnSAbrams/videos
There you will see a lot of video's, some you may have already seen but those are all of his that I know of. I have his dvd also & it is very informative. A late congrats on the Dovo you already have. I'm sure it has served you well. There's plenty to learn here so absorb it like a sponge. You will find all kinds of cool stuff. That's how I did it, I just clicked on everything I could click on.
If you have any questions just ask on the forum or feel free to send me a personal message. I have made a few sets of scales for some straights. Here's a couple links to some I've made:
