Thanked: 4Thanks for all the welcome greetings.
Eddy79, I have not had it professionally honed. The cost of honing would be close to 1/2 the cost of the razor, so I'm thinking I should upgrade anyway. I have been getting better results, so I'm hoping my methods of honing, stroking and/or shaving are improving. I'm getting closer shaves, but my face feels raw. Hopefully it will all come together.

Thats probably a combo of dull razor and either too much pressure or too many passes... but both will improve in time what kind of razor did you get

Scott, if your face feels raw, you're trying too hard. Don't shave for a couple of days. Rest your skin. When you shave, don't think of it as cutting your whiskers, just think of easily wiping away your shave cream. Only use the pressure required to keep the razor against your skin. Gently as possible, just wipe the soap/cream away. If your razor is honed/striopped ok, the hair will be removed with the cream.
You won't achieve BBS straight away, but don't worry. All you are looking to get at this stage is a decent shave. Be patient. Good luck.

Thanked: 4I got a Gold Dollar as a gift, which seems pretty sharp. I can't get it to pass the hanging hair test, but it will cut the brush hair with a light pass easily. If I skip a day, I get worse results. It's like I'm not cutting anything on the first pass. Like I said I'm making improvements, so I'm calling it progress. It's a lot of trial and error for all parts of the process, and I'm enjoying the journey. And at least I'm not bleeding anymore. I guess I should have researched everything more, but like I said I got it as a gift, so I'm trying to make the best of it. I was using a safety DE to make a cleanup pass up until this week, so things are looking up.
Thanks for all the comments

Thanked: 4Thanks! I have been reading lots of posts and gathering as much info as I can. I've taken everyone's advice, and I have made considerable improvements in my shaves. Special thanks to wayne394 and Razorrookie01: i'm using the less is more concept as it relates to pressure and the results are good--not great but a good improvement.
And to top it off I just scored a Ralf Aust combo with a strop and Lynn's DVD, all brand new condition on eBay, for $70 including shipping. It arrived at noon, and I was shaving by 3. what a difference.
Great info here! glad to be a part of it.

If you are listening to the advise , then you should know send it out and get it shave ready! Your shaves will really be good then , that is one of the most important factors in success. Good luck. Tc

Thanked: 4This was purchased from straight razor design, which also included a honing certificate. I don't think it was used much if any. It is brand new and passes the HHT.
