Hey guys my name is Marc I'm 29yrs old and and new to the straight razor scene and I've been looking for a few weeks for a decent blade. For some reason I keep coming back to a Griffon XX 00 11/16 no nicks or cracks but has some staining. But being new to this I'm not sure if this is a good deal for a first time straight bade. I have a Dovo Shavette on the way and I'm anticipating the Shavette to cut as close as my Safety razor with a similar feel to a straight. My biggest concerns and a major learn curve for me will be honing and stropping. I'm excited to learn and educate myself especially when shaving is something I have to do almost daily.

Woo! Another Hoosier! Welcome aboard. I'm new myself, about a month in with a straight. I went from cartridges & goo in a can to this whole bag .

    Hello Marc,

    Welcome to Straight Razor Place.

The Griffen is a good razor, but I don't know how good a shape yours is in. Find a honemeister and have the blade honed professionally.

For now, you need not concern yourself with honing. That is a totally different skill. First hone your shaving skills and then take up honing your razors.

Stropping is an absolute essential for straight razor shaving. Learn to strop and learn it well.

The shavette is not exactly the traditional straight razor, although you're in the general neighborhood with it. The shavette is also far less forgiving than the traditional straight razor. Still, it should give you a start, although I recommend getting to the traditional straight razor as soon as possible.

You will find a treasure of information on SRP. Look around and ask questions.

This is the one I was looking at, just need to polish it and Ill have the edge professionally done. The box isn't the correct one but I don't care about the box.

    Marc,
From the photo that looks like a good starter for you. Yes, clean it up a bit and have it honed professionally.
