Thanked: 0Newbie from AUS
Hello All,
Started shaving with straight razor a couple of years ago, love it and got some of my mates hooked on it too. I ended up getting a dovo renaissance, dovo shavette and a dovo dbl razor. The other day my dad said he found my grandpops straight razors and strop that he stashed when he passed in the early 1980s. Now these razors my dad bought for pops before the 70s from overseas and all are made in solingen. I am keen to restore the GOTTA razor. It has 'finest silver steel' stamped on it but I want this mainly because its a thinner type of blade. I have to say I am VERY impressed these metals look like this after nearly 50yrs and have been packed away for the past 30+. The photos show the condition they came out of storage, they are the 2 black ones(Tiger, GOTTA) and the white one(KAMA).
Questions on restoration:
-I have coarse and mild honing pastes, will they suit to sharpen this blade?
-any concerns for disinfecting? I don't have barbicide or anything, any other household items that can do the job?
EDIT:the top photo looks like the blades have some surface rust but its just the photo, no rust.
Cheers!

Hi JGP. Welcome to SRP.
Those look like some nice razors. You could try stropping with the paste that you mentioned but most likely they will need to be honed.

G'day mate
Awesome starter kit some great looking blades there
I would definately get at least 1 hone properly by someone who knows how to, then the rest you could play with if you want
No need for barbicide if been in storage that long just clean with a bit of soap and water etc
Where are you located?
add it to your profile as there maybe someone closer than you think to help out
If central Qld or higher I'll help where I can
But you may have someone next door ?.Saved,
to shave another day.

Hi and welcome. I would ask what are the honing pastes you have and what is thier intended use. Many pastes and sprays are no good for razors. As Substance said where are you. There are quite a few of us around and many are willing to help out. Being in storage that long I would say that it's a good idea to have them honed from bevel set to make sure that they will be shave ready. Good luck

Welcome to the SRP Forum! Those are some nice looking razors. Get them professionally honed the first go round, so that you truly know what shave ready is.

might ask my local barber..
paste I have is the dovo red. I gave it a shot but the razors definitely need a hone from the feel of things..
