Thanked: 0New to forum from Dallas TX.
Just started back with a straight razor. Wet shaved most of my life and tried straight razors about 30 years ago till I woke up and tried to shave while half asleep. I've learned recently I was doing every thing wrong anyway. I'm really attracted by the idea of not having to replace and pay for all those disposable blades. Then there is that allure of having an extremely sharp blade against my throat, well sharing the experience my grandfather and dad went through for a clean shave.

Welcome to the forum!!
We have some shared experiences, time line....only I tried my Great ++ (?) Grandfather's Sheffield Wedge about 43 years ago. No internet, no old barbers to draw from, etc. and I put it up for a long time.
Had the same sentiment as you about disposables. Got tired of buying them and decided I'd save money by using a straight. Now, with discipline, you can!
But, when the "Acquisition Disorders" begin, and, without some serious discipline, they will. Razor, Strop/Soap, Hone...etc. RAD, SAD, HAD.....you can go off the deep end and, although it's fun and exciting, you can spend some serious cash in no time. Been there!!
Enjoy the forum, and the experience, but if you really want to save money, stay strong!!
Have fun!!
Best Regards,

There is a Cantankerous Old Fart ( ) that I'm Very Proud to call my friend in Fort Worth that might have the time to give you some hands on help, if you are interested, PM me and I'll see if I can put you in contact with him.
Again, welcome! It's a long strange trip but well worth the journey. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 0Well cheated and used the DE this morning. Too rushed for straight.
Did have one question. How long should I be able to go on average before needing razor re-honed.

Welcome to Wonderland as you have just started down the Rabbit Hole. hehehe
That question has many variables that come in to to the equation;
How heavy is your beard
How's your stropping
How's your preshave prep
What kind of razor do you have
Really the list goes on and on.
With 'Proper' Stropping I've been able to keep an edge shaving well for about 3 months, but I will say that I could tell that the edge was deteriorating about 2 months in. Back then I didn't own a hone and now I play with my edges so much I really haven't kept track of how long I can go before I notice a degradation of the edges performance.
That's why there really isn't a Hard and Fast Rule. Each individual is unique and so his edges will last differently from someone else's even with the same blade, and everything else.
Enjoy the ride. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.
