Thanked: 0Newby from KY
Hello All,
I'm just getting into the straight razor shaving at 58 yrs of age. I used to watch my dad shave and strop when I was growing up so I have at least a entry level idea of whats going on. I sharpen knives also for my friends at work and they seem to swear by my efforts. I will surely get into honing also. I recently purchased 2 vintage Boker razors, 1 shave ready, and 1 not. Got a good Illinois 23" strop to start. Glad to be able to join this forum and be able to soak up some in depth knowledge from you that have already traveled the road I'm starting. Thanks, Ed

Thanked: 4826Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of information here and a lot of friendly and knowledgable people. Concentrate on learning to shave and worry about the honing much later. Although many like to hone their own blades, there are a bunch too that simply send them out. There are many aspects to shaving with a straight and I hope you enjoy them all.

Thanked: 31Welcome to SRP. I am in the Hartford area if I can be of assistance. +1 on shaving for a while before trying to hone. But then again.......I couldn't wait either and started the madness at the three month mark with antique store finds as my razor dulled. Have fun.

Hi and welcome from another Ed. Sounds like you already have it planned out. Learn to shave with your shave ready razor. Honing while fun is going to take a bit to get right. See if you can find someone local to show you the ropes and it will save a lot of trial and error and more than a little frustration. I did start honing right from the start and believe it made the learning curve for honing and shaving longer. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed
