Thanked: 0Hello from the Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa!
Hi guys,
I wanted to introduce myself as a DE shaver about to tentatively dip his toe into the world of straights! I have been DE shaving for some time now and get immense satisfaction from it.
I have also been a fan of doing things how they were traditionally (and often 'properly'!) done and initially always had the intention of seeing if DE shaving would be my 'gateway drug' into the world of straights, but as with many things in life I ended up getting side tracked and having far too much fun en route.
I have recently been traveling through Berlin and found a wonderful shaving shop there that stocked a fairly extensive offering of Ralf Aust straights- I decided that if I was ever going to take the plunge, this would be the time and I picked up a 6/8 Spanish Point in Olivewood scales.
I live and work in the bush a good couple of hours away from the nearest (very small) town and there aren't any options for professional honing in SA (not that our postal service could be trusted to deliver and return an expensive item either!) so I will also be acquiring some hones (probably a Norton 4k/8k combo) and attempting to learn that fine art too- wish me luck!
Anyway, I wanted to thank regular contributors to the forum anyway as I have been a long time lurker and I am looking forward to participating in what seems to be a very helpful and friendly community.Last edited by panthera; 06-16-2015 at 11:28 AM.

Welcome to the forum panthera. You've come to the right place! So much to learn, but so much information on here and so many helpful members. You'll love it! I've only recently got back from Berlin myself. Was the shop you went to The Different Scent? I saw a selection of Ralf Austs and Bokers there. If it wasn't that shop, then you have to tell us all which shop it was!

Thanked: 0Yes this was at The Different Scent! Awesome shop, very good bricks and mortar offering which was good to see. They had maybe 20 different RAs in stock, 3 or 4 Bokers and a couple of Dovos. Unfortunately they had run out of stock of Tabula Rasa soap so I was a little disappointed. Another shop in Berlin well worth checking out for soaps, creams and colognes is called The English Scent.
