Im a total newb to straight shaving I've never had a straight shave but since I got out of the coast guard in 2000 I've been wanting to try it I've acquired a brush and soap and bowl and now I need to be pointed towards a decent used razor for a fair price that I can start and practice with I'm glad there are places like this to help newbs like me

Do you want new or vintage. For good vintage the classifieds on here are a good bet. Will also be shave ready. Have no new myself but Ralf Aust have a good reputation for new razors.

Sorry missed "used" on first read. Definitely classifieds on here then. Though have also heard good things about Whipped Dog if you're not worried about pretty and want a razor that's shave ready and inexpensive to try out a straight.

Do you have any preference on razor size? Have a 5/8 would happily post to you or honer of your choice. I'm also quite new so my honing isn't up to the standard of the experts. If you look at my recent posts it is the Kropp with white scales. Is just a tiny tad under 5/8s. Am finding I prefer slightly bigger blades.

Whipped dog is apparently also good for starter strops.

Welcome from Lizard Lick. You came to the right place.

You also hit my area of expertise. I am qualified to report it's an excellent sport, being a veteran shaving with straights when disabled and on a budget.

    Where you?

If you find someone to hone it for you is probably easiest to post to them and then on to you. Is a razor I got on auction site for surprisingly little for how decent it is. Check on classifieds for a honer is probably a good bet for that. A simple honing won't cost much. But get some advice on here about decent strops, I believe there are quite a few decent american strop companies that are quite affordable. Don't waste money on a cheap ebay strop.
