    Default Hoezit?! From South Africa

I am not shaving much at the moment... except once i sharpen something... i make knives as a hobby and i believe in grinding them thin... but found out that thin... is relative... and a lot of knifemakers from around here... make straight razors more suited to the gangster style use or kitchen use rather than real shaving... so after a long hard look at and trying wet shaving with some knives i made... i decided that i know nothing and better find out before i try to grind the profiles i cut... and a gyuto is not a very useful razor...

Welcome aboard AndreGrobler. You will find more information here than you expected because it is the most informative & friendly shaving forum around. You made a very wise decision. If you have any questions, just ask but for now you might start in the Beginners Guide:

Straight Razor Place Library:Books/Beginners Guide - Straight Razor Place Library

That is in the Library & if you click on Library above, you will find a lot of great information there. It just never stops!
Good luck & great to have you here.

Hey and welcome to the forum.

You might want to have a look at The Workshop and ask some questions there for specifics on grinding blades. SR blades do not necessarily have to be uber thin but come in a variety of grinds from extra hollow up to near wedges The straight razor - Straight Razor Place Library . Oth the geometry of the blade has to be correct in order to have the bevel angle within spec when you hone with the spine and bevel on the hone not spine raised as you would for a knife.

Great post, now if only all those that try to convince us that a kitchen knife/spoon/cleaver shaves as good as a razor stop making all those videos...

I have to admit... i did make a video... albeit dry shaving... it was a little silly you can hear the edge plinking as it meets hair... wet shaving was somewhat smooth... i did not go close to the places that resemble a corner...
