    Default New from New Zealand

Hi guys got my first straight online though a Facebook group found you guys read up on the subject, traded in my gold dollar for a dovo and never looked back. I would also be interested in learning the maintenance side of owning a straight or at least find people in nz who do

Hi & welcome to SRP. You will find a wealth of knowledge so just click on the Library above & go from there. Starting with the Beginners Guide would be the best thing to do, then move on from there & you will find all kinds of helpful information on there as you go.
Most likely it was a good thing you moved on from the Gold Dollar as each one is different in one way or another & are cheaply made but many members here use them but myself, I have no interest in one. I have enough nice straights, I don't need one of those. A Dovo is a good straight but you want to make sure it is shave ready. Can you get a comfortable shave with it? I also hope you have a strop. That is a necessity when using a straight along with a good brush, soap & mug or scuttle. If your straight is not shave ready, it would be in your best interest to have it honed by a pro. That way you will have some ideas of how a shave ready straight should shave. You might want to shop for a second good one as well so that if you send one out to be honed, you will have something to shave with.
Great to have you here & I hope you enjoy the forum. BTW, I see you are from New Zealand so you also might find a vendor closer to you so that shipping isn't very expensive.
If you have any questions just ask.
    Good luck my friend.

Hi and welcome. There a a few here from NZ so do a member search and see if you can find someone local. 1 on 1 help will cut the learning curve significantly. Does the dovo have the factory edge. If so it is unlikely shave ready. For maintenance a pasted strop and a barbers hone or finishing stone will see you set for a long time. As said a strop is a must and is used after every shave. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.

To answer the questions above I do indeed have a strop brush, scuttle, pasted strop I would be keen to get a barber hone if anyone can point me to one. The dovo did come honed from the web site I brought it from and it definitely shaves but im not sure if it is as sharp as it could be not sure if its my stroping or what. I just received my new razor that I brought from the srp classifieds today so il use that as a benchmark for future blades

That's great! I removed all that extra info I put up earlier since you don't need it. It sounds like you have mostly what you need except a hone or some hones in different grit. If you end up buying new hones, do keep in mind they will need to be lapped because new hones don't come lapped.
    Congrats on your new addition!

What pasted strop do you have. A finishing stone can be used like a barbers hone for touch ups and is a definite grit. There are lots of good barbers hones but you need one in good condition and no all are great. Are you planning to learn to hone fully or just maintain your razors. There are a lot of different ways to get from a to b but your path will dictate what is best for you. If you can let us know we can give advice better suited for your needs.
