Default Hello from the New Orleans area

I am new to wet shaving in general. Been DE shaving for about 3 months. I am looking to get a SR and will probably buy one from the classifieds here when the time comes(aka. I'm currently fundless in the shave department due to wife finding out how much I spent on my shaving supplies). I was wondering if there was someone local that could show me how to use shaving soap, I've bought a few different types and watched what seems like every YT video on the subject but I still can't get it even close to right. I've been using a cream since about the second week.

    Personal notes:
I have been in the Louisiana Army National Guard for 8 years (13B). Trying to figure out how to wet shave while in the field.

No problem. I was shaving in the field in 70-71 , all you need is a razor , brush and any soap, and a steel pot or in the case of the new army whatever helmet they give you Wallace , shaving ,, even had to do it that way out in Indian territory ,, you,lol do fine. Tc

Welcome to SRP. What kind of soap and brush are you using? How's the water where you are? You may want to try building a lather with distilled water and see if you don't have better luck.

I started with a classic shave brand best badger and have since switched to an Omega boar brush. I originally bought a mug from classicshave.com and it came with some lavender classic shave soap. The first time I shaved I got a passable lather, not the best but I could have lived with it, but after that every time I tried I got a soupy mess. I've tried loading both brushes dry, wet, face lather, bowl lather, and what seems like everything in between. I have hard city water not exactly how hard but it's higher than 10gpg. I used distilled water and that didn't help much. So I bought a few samples of mystic water shave soap and that was a little better, it is slicker than the other soap but it dries out relatively quick. So now I load the mystic water I have left and use some TOBS cream. Makes a good lather and the mixture of smells is pleasing.
