Thanked: 3Hello from Buenos Aires
Hello everybody,
I've been a lurker around this forum for sometime. Thanks to all the people here offering their experiences, I jumped and bought a straight razor, strop and brush (from SRD), and have been shaving exclusively with it as for 4 months now. I am almost 40, and before I always used match 3 and then a braun electric, but the razor burn and uncomfortable feel was always there, till I found this blog (by accident, when I was looking in a knife forum how to sharpen an s30v steel knife I have).
I only have and use a Ralf Aust razor (round point, 5/8). It came very sharp from SRD and after some uses I dulled it by poor stropping. I also bought from SRD a Norton stone 4/8 k combo. Following the technique in this video: <span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: rgb(250, 250, 250);">www.youtube.com/watch?v=y53SL9QMq6I
Now my stropping has become better and the blade keeps a comfortable edge much longer. Although I still knick the strop sometimes. But I find that honing, with the water over the stone and the movement and sound of the blade, is quite relaxing and a moment I enjoy, late at night usually, when my little kids are sleeping.
Having no one to teach me face to face, I followed the excellent information here in the forum, as well as the great videos posted. From the first shave till today I only used my straight. Shaving is a moment I look forward to (I never thought that that was possible at all!!). And the learning process is a path of joy for me.
The shaves with the straight are most comfortable and the closest I ever had. I will be a straight user for life.
My next trip to the US I will try to buy a kamisori. That's going to be my next blade.
Cheers,
Santiago.

Welcome to the forum Santiago. Looks like you are well into the game now, congratulations. I know exactly how you feel having to learn on my own with no face to face time with anyone else also. I think most here also know the feeling of finally enjoying and looking forward to shave with a SR rather than as before dreading the daily shave.

Welcome. I too live too far away from others to be able to do much in the way of one on one learning. If you travel regularly, try to time it so you can get to a meet, or perhaps a one on one session. You will be amazed at how much you can learn in person.

Welcome! It sounds like you really jumped into this hobby with both feet like you, I find honing to be very relaxing, especially at the end of a long week.

Welcome to SRP Santiago. I hope you learn a lot here since there is a lot of knowledge here & many members who can provide you with plenty of good advice. It's unfortunate you are in a different country where you don't have any local help. You might check with some old barbers who might be close to you to see if they have ever used a straight razor & if so, could they help you out? Aside from that, I would say to read up on all you can on here in the Library which is where you can learn a lot of good information. Great to have someone from another country.
Good luck my friend.

Bienvenido a SRP, Santiago. Good job. Sounds like my story too, I dulled my first razor but with the videos here fixed it. Lots of good learning and top quality people.
