    Default Hello from Seattle

    Hello everyone,
I enjoy shaving with a DE razor and have been wanting to explore the straight razor hobby. I don't have a blade yet so that kinda tells you where I'm at. I've been watching some videos on YouTube and exploring some of the product sites to try and get familiar with everything. Basically the same way I learned when I started smoking a pipe. Now I'm a member of the Seattle Pipe Club and suffer from both PAD and TAD. I feel soon I will also be adding RAD to the list of ailments I feel becoming part of a group of people that share the same hobby is the best way to learn, progress and meet some great people as well. It was that way when I started flying remote control airplanes and got into HAM Radio. Always someone there to provide you with what u need or give you advice from experience. Now I have more airplanes and radios than I know what to do with. Those were all face to face hobbies so I'm sure this will be different in some ways. Thanks for reading and I look forward to becoming part of the group.

    Welcome!

Starting with a DE helps a lot; you learn about shaving angle and pressure, and working up a proper lather with a brush. Switching to a SR is easier when there's less new stuff to learn and worry about.

Straight Razor Designs has some great razor/strop combos that make the strop nearly free. Additionally, each razor is professionally honed to shave readiness, and there are no junk razors for sale. Alternatively, you can buy a used razor from the Classifieds here (avoid eBay for now) and then buy a strop from SRD or elsewhere.

Get a decent, mid-range strop. Avoiding expensive ones at first will save you a lot of heartache when you're learning and nick your strop (or worse).

Welcome! Agree with AlanQ on the patience. Slow is good with this pasttime. Read and watch a lot before you buy, so you know what you're getting. It will help a lot, and you don't need to go overboard with purchasing multiples of everything early (which some of us did).
