Thanked: 0New Here From North Carolina
Hello. I was doing some research on straight razors and found this site a month or so ago. I have been watching the site for a bit..just never posted. Anyway.... This site is a great source of information and very active...great job! As someone who wants to start using a straight razor and has no idea where to begin...I thought I would join! Thanks for letting me!

Welcome to the forum, as you have been reading for a while I probably don't need to point you at the library, however if you haven't visited it it is a valuable source of info. The beginners forum is also a good resource, reading through the threads you will find a lot of common responses to most questions.
All that being said please don't be reticent if you have any questions.
Do you have any thoughts on what might interest you shaving wise?
Regards ed
Sorry after re reading your post here are some thoughts on where to begin:
1- get a decent soap and or cream and brush, you can be learning to build a good lather while you figure the rest out;
2- teach yourself to strop, a piece of newspaper 2-3" wide held with bulldog clips and a butter knife are all you really need for this. Practice pressure (if the paper comes out of the clip you are stropping too hard) and the flip. You could equally select a reasonable strop for this exercise then you will have an important part of your kit.
3- choose a razor that you like and suits your budget, a razor that you like will help you to maintain interest until you get your technique down. Generally 5/8 or 6/8 sizes are advised for beginners. Either is as good as the other. Whatever you choose you will learn to use with practice.Last edited by edhewitt; 09-17-2015 at 11:52 PM.

Welcome, I'm in Nags Head, and there are a whole slew of members in NC.
Look around and ask questions, especially if you haven't bought gear yet. You won't get steered wrong.
if you're looking for a razor, look at the classifieds. There are a couple of great buys there.Just call me Harold
