Thanked: 0Thought I'd say hello
Hello all. I just found this forum the other day and thought I'd join as I am preparing to take the plunge into straight razor shaving. I've recently ordered a Dovo Black Best Quality razor from vintagestraightrazor.com and a strop from Amazon; already have a badger hair brush, soap, etc.. I'll confess to fears of a sliced jugular vein. I can honestly say I have no idea why I have suddenly gotten interested in straight razors when I'm in my late-fifties but I guess you're never too old to try new things. I'm from the Louisville, Kentucky area if anyone from around the Bluegrass wants to say hey (or anybody else, for that matter). My razor and strop should be coming in in a few days. Let the advice start rolling in!

Hello. Welcome to Straight Razor Place.
My advice is to read the beginners guide in the SR P library if you haven't already and watch Lynn Abram's videos on shaving and stripping on YouTube. Beginner's guide to straight razor shaving - Straight Razor Place Library

Welcome! A Dovo is a good choice for your first straight, mine was a yellow round point 5/8 and it treated me well.
As mentioned above, watch some videos and do a lot of reading. Remember to take it slow and learn from the mistakes you will make. Most of all, have fun!!!

Welcome aboard Clusterbuster ! It is natural to feel a bit of trepidation when first placing a very sharp blade to your throat. The fear will subside with experience , but hopefully a healthy respect for the edge will remain. If you stick with it I am sure you will find yourself looking forward to the shave rather than finding it a chore.

Hi Clusterbuster & welcome to SRP. A Dovo is a good choice for a straight razor. It's too bad you didn't find this site first. you would most likely had been directed to either the Classifieds on here or to Straight Razor Designs (SRD) which is in part owned by Lynn who owns this forum. The Ralf Aust is a very good deal & they have a set you can buy but since you have the Dovo coming, all is well enough. You will most importantly need to learn to strop. You can practice using a butter knife or dull knife so you don't cut a new strop. If that happens, it's usually okay & can be sanded out or glued back down with super glue (CA) or rubber cement. Like Firefighter2 said, browse the site. There is a lot to learn but start in the Library where Leatherstockiings said to & go from there. Click on anything you can & you will go places & be amazed at what you find here.
Any questions, just ask.
Good luck my friend.
