New Guy, Checking In
Hi There!
I'm Adrien, forty-something, live in southern California, but on the cusp of relocating to Virginia. I work in IT (DBA and phones, strangely enough).
Long-time safety-razor guy, I've flirted with the SR idea off-and-on. I've recently come across an old razor that belonged to my grandfather; I'll be posting pics and questions about it in the Razor forum in a bit.
Guess that's it for now.

Welcome to SRP!
Heirloom razors are awesome. I'd suggest that you not try to use it to learn to shave with - your first straight will take some heavy abuse.
Check out the beginner's section in the library and it will answer a lot of your questions. We'll be happy to answer all of your other questions.
And post some razor pics. We love razor pics. And somebody will probably know all about the razor in question. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Welcome, ask if there is anything you want to know! As mentioned above, if you want to enter the world of straight razor shaving you might want to think about getting a new razor. If you really want to give it a try with your grandad's, have it professionally honed first. Also...don't forget to post pictures!

Hi and welcome. Make sure that you send the heirloom to a pro for cleanup and honing. Not something you want to learn your rookie mistakes on. Go luck and any questions feel free to ask

Welcome to SRP and with the holy-grail of shaving artifacts... An Heirloom Razor from a close relative!! Those are some of the best rarities out there!
Scariest thing about having your Heirloom Razor worked is shipping... No amount of insurance can cover those razors so try to find someone local you can hand it to rather than shipping. I'm not saying lots of stuff gets lost in the mail but rwther that some of the saddest and most frustrating posts are when something so cool/priceless gets lost in shipping.
Also, keep an eye out here:
Get Togethers and Meetings
... as at an in-pserson meet you will learn more in a few hours than you could in months of online study... And, you may likely run into someone local/close that can get your Granddad's SR back into action for yiu!!

Thanks all, for the greetings and advice.
Yeah, I definitely don't intend to use grandpa's razor as my first straight razor; in truth, the major motivation to actually join rather than continue to lurk was to get some expert advice on if the razor is worth restoring ... Finally got the pictures managed, so I'm on my way to post them now.
