Hello Rowdy & welcome aboard. It would be to your benefit to send it out for a pro honing, especially if it is an heirloom. Also as an heirloom, you may want to get a second or third which is what most have anyway for two reasons. First reason, it is okay to use an heirloom but be very careful. I have seen a few people on here who accidentally bumped it into the faucet or dropped it, breaking or chipping the blade. The second reason being that when you do send one out, you will still have one to shave with. If I were in your shoes, I would use the heirloom only on special occasions but that is just my opinion. The most important thing you need is a strop along with a good brush, soap & mug. You must strop your straight before each use unless you buy one from SRD (Straight Razor Designs). If you do that, you will not need to strop it on the first use. It will come shave ready. You can practice honing with a butter knife to keep from cutting a new strop. Should that happen, it can always be sanded out or glued back down with super glue (CA) or my preference is rubber cement. Everyone else has given some very good advice so far so just learn as much as you can in the Library here. Be patient & take your time.
Good luck my friend.Last edited by engine46; 11-13-2015 at 08:02 PM.

Welcome to the forum Rowdy. Put your hammer down! You need your gentle side for this! Some great advice already given. Read all the library threads, search for keywords too. You'll find more threads that answer your concerns, and if you can't find an answer, just ask. Good luck.
