    Default NJ guy here

    Hey guys,

I'm new to straight razors. I've transitioned over to DE recently and am now going to explore straights. The info I have found on this form has been awesome to say the least. I'm 45 and have been mistakenly using cartridge razors my entire life. I have finally seen the light!

Hi Jeff & welcome aboard. I'm sure you have gotten some good information so far. Just keep on doing what you're doing & ask plenty of questions. Also just take your time & be patient. You will find that using a straight razor will give you the best all around shave if honed & stropped correctly. There is also nothing wrong with using a double edge razor & you can buy sample packs on eBay & Amazon to see which blades you like. I use a straight razor but I'm in a hurry, I will et out one of my old Gillette DE razors to shave with. Great to have you here.
    Good luck my friend.

Welcome to SRP jeffrx!! That, "... where have you been all my life...", was my first impression with Wet Shaving as well... Could not figure out how my Dad started with DE's then switched to Carts. Many years later I am still confused on it but some research has suggested that plastic and disposability was a new Tech at the time. ?? Guess it makes some sense as I can remember a number of family vacations spent hurtling down the freeway in a huge station wagon with my parents chainsmoking and chasing the beanbag ashtray as it slid from one side of the dash to the other and with us chucking our fastfood trash out the window rather than wait for a trash can.

Still leaves me scratching my head, though, as Wet Shaving is just such an obvious higher quality of shave and the money savngs can be profound. ??

    Enjoy you Shaving Journey!

Welcome Jeff, glad to here your looking to possibly become a Str8 guy. It was scary when I first started, but after 30years, its like breathing air to me.
The best part is not having to shave everyday, and the money saved on cartridges allows me to buy more straights. You'll one day, become afflicted with RAD,
Its just inevitable, should you go Str8 [emoji5]

Welcome. Know exactly what you mean. Discovered DEs and the improvement was so vast that had to see if even older (straights ) were better. No surprise, they are. Just take some practice.

Starting with a DE is a good move. You get the hang of techniques like angle and pressure, as well as lather building, built up first. Then you're not learning everything at once while trying to use a straight.

Do a lot of reading before buying your straight; the library and these forums are a great place to learn about the various pitfalls that first time buyers can fall into.
