I'm always interested to learn how the long time (pre InterWeb) Straight razor shavers learned the craft...

Looking forward to hearing more.

Smooth Shaving..
Basically I learned the craft/art on my own. As a little boy I remember watching the local barber shave old Walter, the man with the toughest beard in town. The sound of the blade neatly clipping his ornery whiskers fascinated me and I hoped that someday my beard would be as tough as Walter's. As I got older more hormones kicked in and I realized that a one pass shave WTG would not do anymore so I experimented going ATG. When I was in my early 20's I got my first barber shave from the same local barber that shaved old Walter. By this time my beard was like barb wire and I got my first 3 pass with hot towels. I felt like a KING. My Dad, rest his soul, hated my straight razors. He always told my Mother, "Ma someday we're going to find him dead in a pool of blood."
