A few hours of hands on learning is the way to go with honing if possible

Well Matt welcome to the support group known as SRP. You are officially diagnosed with straight razor disorder & it is such a joy to know there are others out there. Now I really know I'm not the only one with it. The Library is full of information so click on anything ya can & you will go on a journey you won't forget!
What kind of razor did you get for Christmas?
Good luck my friend.Last edited by engine46; 01-03-2016 at 10:25 AM.

Hi and welcome. We're here to help you on the path of least resistance to a good shave. You are right that sharp and comfortable can be different entirely. Getting the razor properly sharp is only half of it. It also needs to be comfortable on the face. Just because it's sharp doesn't mean it's nice to shave with. If you do decide to take a crack at the gold dollar read up about fixing the basic faults first. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Oh & I usually will advise a new member to practice with a butterknife or any dull knife to keep from cutting a new strop & dulling a good edge also. It has happened to many of us..........

You are getting good advice. GO SLOW
Getting to the point of a great shave everyday has a long learning curve.
Take RodB's advice and find a local member to give tips on how to do the seemingly simple but actually complex procedures in this hobby. If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

I agree. Ill ask around when i get to that point. For now i have stumbled across Lynns Youtube channel and i'm absorbing as much information as possible.
My GF got me a Gold Dollar. I have to admit i did not fall in love with it. It was however the spark that lit the SR fire in my mind.
I will! I haven't found any technical GD specific info yet except for the debate concerning their value. I'm sure if i look ill find it. Thanks!!
That's really good advice. Ill try a butterknife first. In a daze during the wee hours of the morning a few nights ago i ordered a Tony Miller Strop after reading amazing reviews. The next day i realized what i had done. I went ahead and ordered a cheaper one to practice on for a bit. The only thing touching the TM strap for a while will be my oily palms
That is the plan. I will admit i am extremely interested in restoring and honing. I have the stones on the way in addition to a few i already own.. but im gonna lap and chamfer them and then set them aside for a bit until i can actually get a good shave with a professionally sharpened SR.
I was hot outta the gates for honing at first but i think stropping and the lather and a working shave routine will be the first skills i try to perfect.
Thanks again guys for all the advice and warm welcomes!!
