Thanked: 0Howdy folks.
Hello everyone,
I recently found out that I have a straight razor coming my way (something i was planning to get in the future) so figured now was a perfect time to come over and join.
I am a novice shaver having enjoyed growing my beard. I will be using the straight razor to cut the hair on my scalp any advice anyone could give me regarding this would be ideal. This includes maintenance of my razor and getting it cut ready, don't much fancy trying to shave with a potential butter knife.
Anyway... its a pleasure to make folks aquintance.

Thanked: 250Welcome to the site. I'm afraid I can't help you with head shaving. When you get to be my age you tend to want to keep the little hair you have left.

Only advise I would give you is read about beginners in our library, the principles will be about the same, good prep, stretching the skin, making a good lather, and tell us where you got the razor so we can determine if it's shave ready, lots of all these new razor sellers don't hone , just sell. If it's from someone reputable it'll be fine, as to maintaining it, you will need to learn how to strop so you don't mess up your edge. It will stay in good shape for awhile with just the leather then a refresh every now and then can be had with paste on a strop. Or a barbers hone and a few laps on it. As to honing , just send it to one of the pros around here and it's done for a lot less than buying stones, especially if all your wanting to do is shave with one, Other than that welcome and shaving your head will mean shaving a lot by feel, but that can be done, I only have one eye so half my face is done by feel too. Hi and welcome. There are a few videos so give them a watch. For maintenance start with a strop and high grit hone and just refreshing your edge. Any more than that and you start on another learning curve on top of the one you already have

Thanked: 0Thanks for the welcomes everyone!
Do not worry for I am making my way through the beginners section. Unfortunately I am not sure where exactly it came from as it is a gift (I still don't actually have it yet, simply know it is making its way to me) and I would be apprehensive about asking where it was bought as it would feel too similar to looking a gift horse in the mouth. I guess I will have to test it when it comes, assuming it would need honing how would i go about getting it honed? As for barbers hones: are there any people would recommend?
Thankfully shaving by feel is not daunting to me, I am partially sighted so when i used to shave my face that was always by feel.
Thanks again everyone for the warm welcomes.
