    Default Old newbie!

Hi guys. I have been reading this forum for months now and decided it was time to make myself known to the experts. My name is Garry and I have been collecting razors and shaving related stuff for about 30 years but have never done anything with it all! I have about 50 straight razors and would really like to get into restoration, as another hobby of mine is knife making/handling. I'm sure at some stage I will be picking those little brain cells for some much needed info and tips!
So hi all, and can I just add that this is the most informative site on this subject I have found, so well done to you all
I will at some stage make a list of all the razors I own, then perhaps you guys can advise on what to keep and what to "recycle"?
    Thanks

Welcome! If It's not intruding, what led you to collect so many and what has kept you from trying them? I had one that I had for 30-35 years and used only a few times without success, so I stored it. My reason was lack of knowledge about how to prepare a razor properly for shaving and how to shave with success. When I found this site, my wishes were answered!

Hi Garry & welcome aboard. We have had a few knife making & such join the group & you're right, this one is the most knowledgable site I know of & the only one I know of with so much good information. It sounds like you already know your way around here. You will find answers to many questions in mind & if not, just ask. I had a few straight razors for many years before I joined but I finally did & when I did have my first shave with a straight, there was no turning back. It was like the difference between dial up internet which I had when I first got a computer long ago & changing to high speed internet, no going back! You will get the closest, smoothest shave with a straight. You will see once you try it with a shave ready edge. Second to a straight is a good single or double edge razor. Great to have you here.
    Good luck my friend.

Thanks to all of you for a great welcome!
I've had a quick count up and have 42 razors at present. I have to admit most of those are in very poor condition, however there are a few that could be worth saving. I shaved once with a str8 and it was the scariest thing I have ever done! Now I have found this site, perhaps I can gather the info needed to shave properly with one. I realise it takes time and I am determined to succeed!! From what I've read hare, I'm sure I can count on you guys and gals for support. Would you recommend buying a new shave ready razor or having one of mine refurbished? At some stage I will list them and send a few pics for your amusement.
    Take care.
By the way, how do you add a saying at the bottom of your posts?

First of all Garry, you have two r's in your name.
My recommendation is to just take your 3 favorite razors (arbitrary number) and post pics of them. Someone will tell you if they would be good candidates for restoration, although a very close look is necessary sometimes, as in a jewelers loupe. But gross problems could be identified through a good pic.
    Anyway, welcome.
