    Default New Memeber from Munich

Hello All- I'm a relatively new member of SRP. I've been shaving with a straight for about six months (DE safety before that). I've followed a lot of advice on the site with great results so far.

I'm currently using my grandfather's Cattaraugus Cuttlery razor that I had honed here in Munich by someone recommended to me by my barber. I'm having a hard time determining how well the razor was honed. It does not drag and does not leave me with razor burn, but I have a feeling it was not properly finished. Since this is the only razor I've used I don't have a good basis for comparison.

This is may be a long shot, but does anyone know of a hone meister in Munich (or anywhere in Germany)? Or any advice determining the sharpness of the razor? I've tried many of the tests explained here, but I would say the results are inconclusive.

I am ordering a Ralf Aust soon (which I've heard come shave ready) for comparison.

    Thanks!

Welcome. You didn't mention whether you stropped your razor before you shaved. A razor fresh off the hones without stropping gives me a border line miserable shave. Be sure to check out the Shave Of The Day forum and look at the eye candy these guys are shaving with.

Hi there, I would definitely by the second razor, you will then have a good quality NEW razor to compare with. I would also like to echo Benz's point on stropping. As a newbie I have committed most of my early learning efforts to my stropping technique, I bought the Revisor 5/8 Classic which came with a very fine Herold 50*450mm hanging strop with canvas back. The Revisor comes 'shave ready' but although it shaved nicely (for a newbie), my shave this morning was far more enjoyable and far more successful (equal to my very best DE results) than any of my initial attempts, this I put down to having given the razor a really good stropping the night before. The best article on stropping I have read was actually a blog entry written by a member on SRP called mrsell63, entitled NICK FREE STROPPING! I applied the count method he describes, using a 1 second pace stropping action, the results I believe have really improved my whole experience.

I am stropping both before and after each shave (after mainly to make sure the blade is dry and free of any residue). I've been pretty obsessive about stropping technique. Honestly partly because I don't want to damage my strop!

TomP30- I will definitely look for that article and make sure my technique is correct. Thanks!

Incidentally, does anyone know if you can edit the title of a thread? Since I miss a typo.

Hi and welcome. There are a few guy's from Germany on the site. Might pay to see if there is someone close who could help. Most razors aren't shave ready from factory which is why we recommend the vendors we do as they hone before sending it out. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Wilkommen Thomptd65. Since you're in Germany, I'd contact Revisor. Their range of razors is incredible and they should come to you shave ready. Maybe even take a trip to Solingen and visit Revisor or Boker. Good luck my friend.

Welcome to SRP!! +1 on Revisor:

    Home

They sell New, Vintage, Parts and most certainly either Hone or have someone that does it for them. I have had them at the top of my List for a New SR as I've only owned rescues... Someday I will have a 7/8 or 8/8 Revisor for sure!!

Hi Thomptd65 & welcome aboard. You might be able to change the title within a certain amount of time but I can't say for sure. I have changed a title before but in the previous page it still shows the mistake but when a person comes to this page it will show up corrected. You must do it asap. If not, we all know what you meant.
It looks like you already have some knowledge on shaving & have learned some but getting your razor honed right will be a plus & also your shaving technique will also affect your shave. I'm sure you have experimented around with different angles. Just relax & be patient & you will be okay. Where are you are getting a Ralf Aust from? They are very good razors although I do not own one, I heard nothing but good about them & plan to have one some day.
Great to have you here & good luck my friend.

I was going to order it from Ralf Aust directly: http://rasiermesser-manufaktur.de/ But now that I've seen the Revisor website recommended in this thread, I'm reconsidering my choice.
