Thanked: 0Newb from S. FL
Good day everyone. I'm very excited about using a straight razor. I'll be making my purchase in the next week or two. I'm consumed with researching the ideal razor for a beginner. I really look forward to owning one and learning how to mastering the technique. It's a beautiful day in S FL with a temperature at 63 degrees. It's just a tad bit chilly.

Thanked: 634Welcome. If you are getting your razor from The Art of Shaving it will not be shave ready. If you order it from straight Razor Designs it will be shave ready. If you buy a vintage it may need cleaning up or hopefully it also is shave ready check the library and videos and ask questions before making a final decision. Good luck.

Ha! Nice user name. It's a little chillier here in the north, a bit jealous to see 63 for you. That's shorts weather!
I'd recommend a set from whipped dog or Straight Razor Designs, they come with a strop which is important in maintaining the edge.

Hi and welcome. Best razor is one in good condition that is truly shave ready. There is a lot of personal preference in this and until you start you can't decide what your preference is. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask

Hi Neil & welcome aboard. I live in S. Texas so we are having nice weather as well. We have had a warmer winter this season so I dread the hot summer coming. The best thing to do is to click on Library above, go to the Beginners Guide & go from there. When you start stropping, you can practice with a butterknife to keep from damaging a nice strop or dulling a good edge. Check out Lynn Abrams video's on Youtube also. Any questions, just ask. It's such a pleasure to have you here. Good luck my friend.

Thanked: 0Thanks everyone. I've been reading a lot and never read about the idea with a butter knife. I will give it a try. I've also taken advice regarding looking at whipped dog and straight razor design. I'm leaning towards the Boker King Cutter. Straight Razor Design is out of them right now, so I'm waiting for them to get it back in stock. I read many good things about it, especially for a beginner.
I will check out Lynn Abrams videos. I've actually watched a lot of videos.
Engine46-I totally agree with you about the miserable hot weather. The winters are like paradise down here.
Thanks again everyone for all the feedback.-Neil
