Welcome aboard Doug! I like the humor but it is better to give your blood at the right place or go there to shave with a straight razor.
You're in the right place & there's a wealth of information here. The best thing to do if you have't done so yet is to go to the Library above, then to the Beginners Guide & go from there. A strop is the most important tool you will need so learn it & practice with a butterknife at first. If you are wondering why, please feel free to ask. I hate being so redundant in my new member greetings so you might see why in other greetings I have left to others. I have some catching up to do since my internet was down from yesterday morning until a couple hours ago. Also just be patient & take your time. It's a bit of a learning curve so you will be okay & you will love the shave you get with a straight when the razor is honed & stropped correctly.
    Great to have you here.
    Good luck my friend.

Ya you might give up some blood to then straight if the DE got you,, the key word is slow'. You don't know how to shave yet, those cartridge things never taught you anything , so slow it down. Then go easy. Tc

Thanks everyone. I know I've got a long way to go and much to learn. I'll search around for the butter knife lesson. I think I am moving too fast. I did have a pretty good shave tonight, but don't think I'll be able to do my neck for a long time to come. This grasshopper must learn patience . . .

That's why I was saying..............."Also just be patient & take your time."
Sometimes people get too anxious & I know they just can't wait to try but those weepers will teach 'em in time. We all still get 'em sometimes but we try to help out the new guys so they don't butcher their faces up or we'll have to start a new thread, "The Butchered Face", in fact, I think I have seen a thread about people who have had some cuts whether it was from shaving or working on a blade. They have a learning curve & it's a lot different from those damn 4-5 bladed cartridge things I hate so much!

Good point cudarunner, I'm in Monroe WA

Either my razor is not sharp enough or too light. The weight of the razor doesn't want to do any magic for me. Is it the pressure I'm putting into it that causes the burn? I was watching to keep a shallow angle as I read something about burning being cause buy using an angle over 30*
