Thanked: 0New here
Hello all, and thanks for providing so much info on these forums. Just getting into this, I've had a straight since Christmas, but only for neck and top of cheeks as I have had a great beard. I recently shaved the beard and straighted the whole face. I wish I would have read the first shave thread before, no nicks no cuts, but was a bit irritated afterward. Looking forward to learning from you guys.

Thanked: 0My wife got me a cheap one form Amazon, I think it was an Ardent or something. Friday I got three vintage in the mail form eBay, a Romo 3000, a Gam, and one I can't remember. The Gam and the unnamed one seem to be in good condition, but the Romo needs polishing, it has some light surface blemish, not quite pitting, but maybe the start of rust, but really light. I test shaved with the Gam after pad testing, and it shaved, but was a little rough. I have a 10k hone, and a combo 2k/5k that will be here Monday. I have watched some videos by Lynn about the honing process, and read a few of the threads about it, we'll see what I can get done. I have always been able to put an edge on a knife, without guides, so it is not a totally new concept. I think I will practice on the cheapo first.

That's a good idea to practice with the newer one. However it can be difficult to learn to straight shave and hone at the same time. I would recommend sending one or two razors to get professionally honed by someone in the classifieds so you know what shave ready is. Do you have a strop? Lynn and gssixgun youtube videos are priceless for learning honing and stropping. Be sure to watch their hand and wrist positions in the strokes

Thanked: 0Hey guys, thanks for the recommendations about sending one for honing. Unfortunately necessity makes me learning to hone the only option. I'm a poor student, so already the money invested is enough, at least according to my wife, hahaha. If I can't get something then I will look into sending off.
