Thanked: 0Greetings from western Pennsylvania
Hi all , I'm new here. I just discovered this family heirloom Greaves & Sons in a cedar chest in the box. I figured out a lot about it by reading here and other places and I think it is likely dated between 1845 and 1850. Can anyone tell me about the scales? They have the diamond and heart inlays on both sides, but I don't know if they are homemade or some factory/aftermarket replacement of the day. I don't know what material they are either. Thanks for the help and the great resource!

Welcome to the forum! Can't provide any info, but that is a sweet looking blade and the scales should clean up nicely.

Thanked: 0scales
My perception is that the scales are wood -not sure about the inlays. I think the finish was the blackish color toward the butt end of the scales and that the pivot end is the natural color of whatever the material is. That color wipes off as a greenish blue with a rag. Thanks again everyone.
