Thanked: 0Ohio Newbie
Hi everyone!
Just wanted to say hi and thank you for all of your help already on my process to starting to use a straight razor. I was about to buy a cheap one on amazon and then did a little digging and found this forum. It has been an absolute wealth of knowledge already and it kept me from making a mistake with my first purchase. After reading around I think that I have an idea of what I'll need. I am in between getting a Boker King Cutter or a DOVO Best Value. Any advice between the two? Also does anyone have a favorite type of strop that they would recommend? Thanks for all of your help!

Not sure if you've seen the library yet but it will give you a good foundation to start from:
Beginner's guide to straight razor shaving - Straight Razor Place Library
The key to a good shaving SR is to get one that is truly shave ready. The classifieds here on SRP is a good place to find an inexpensive SR.Smarter than I look or, not as dumb as I look. Whichever you prefer.

Hi and welcome. Either razor will serve you well. With the strop just get something with a midrange draw that way at least if not right for you you can decide to go up or down. As said shave ready is the most important thing. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask

Welcome to SRP Jay. Good for you for doing some research before diving head first, your wallet will thank-you and hopefully any frustration you incur will be minimal. As for strops, check out SRD, huge selection and fair prices as I have 2 from them that see regular use. If you have any other questions just ask. Enjoy.

Thanked: 0Thanks for the tips! I hadn't found out about the classified section before, great selection! Does anyone know if SRD is a safe place to get a SR on that is shave ready like the ones in the classified section here?

SRD is one of the few places I recommend for new equipment. It is run by Lynn Abrams, the founder of the forum and has taught many people in the way of the straights. Their strops are very nice and razors are shave ready.
