    Default Hello from Gatineau!

Hello there, I am Stropist and I have been shaving with a straight razor for a little over 4 weeks now (TI Super Gnome Extra in 6/8). I am not new to making things sharp, and have been using the Merkur 33C for about a decade prior to making this switch. I like that most of these tools are not planned with obsolescence in mind, and I like how I can tinker with them and make them my own.

I got on here because the right side of my neck gets irritated a lot more than the left side. It is most likely due to holding the razor a different way, being right handed. I wanted to learn the various "grips" people use, as well as skin care rituals appropriate with this activity.

I look forward to the learning curve, as well as participating in the discussions.

    Thank you for having me.

    Monsieur Stropist

Welcome from the far reaches of Canada. The thing with your grip is that if it is comfortable and you get nice shaves you are doing it right. My grips change with the different areas of my face that I am working on. Some places I hold my razor with the scales straight back, like a fixed handle and other areas I use a standard grip. More important than my grip is skin stretching. Combine that with a very low angle and no pressure and it makes for rash free shave.

    Welcome/Bonjour! to SRP Monsieur Stropist,
Not sure that a different grip will solve your problem, im thinking more about a different pass. The Wiki is full of fantastic information, about technique, different passes, skin stretching etc.

    Welcome to SRP!
Most likely your angle is too steep on the right side of your face.

Hi and welcome. More than a couple reasons for the irritation. Try changing 1 thing at a time. Good luck

Hello RezDog, how do you do and how is Haida Gwaii this time of year? Over here it looks like spring has arrived, a balmy -21C with the wind.

I want to thank you for the tips, I understand that the tightness of the skin will have an impact on the quality and comfort of the shave. More things to research.
