    Default Hello from Southern California

Been thinking about SR for a while now after a few years with brush and safety razors. Bought a kit this week and just did my first shave (well at least my cheeks). I'm hooked! I see this becoming a "my time" routine much like firing up the bike and going for a ride through the hills or fly fishing. I love the whole process and results. I can't wait to whip my kit out on Deployment when the rest of my unit is shaving. I can hear it now "Doc's doing surgery in the head now guys"

Any suggestions or such please fill me in.
I love learning new things especially when they'e a passion, and I see this becoming a passion. I can hear it now: Wife- "just how many razors do you need?" Sez Me-"I don't know how many bras and shoes you need?"

If anybody that hones is in SoCal I'd appreciate a holler. I've got more experience that a man needs sharping knifes, but I know honing a SR is a different beast. I really want to learn.

Anyway I look forward to learning from you Salty guys and having some interesting conversations.

    Cheers,
    Jeremiah

What's up Doc? Welcome to SRP.

Congrats on your straight razor shave! Have you checked out Member's Services under the SRP Classifieds? I'm sure you can find a honer in or near California there.

    Welcome Doc.

You might need a pro hone on your razor, depending on where you bought it from.

    Smooth shaves to you!

Hey Jeremiah, we have an active group in So. Cal from San Francisco to San Diego and will be having a meet at the end of summer. There are a few of us in the OC, LA’ish area.

Here’s some links of our past meets. We also have some informal honing get togethers. Jerry (Ten Pups) in Orange is always doing something.

I’m in Diamond Bar if you need help.

    Thanks Marty,

I'm down here by Temecula. Got any advice on a good Strop? I've got a cheap one that came in the package and can already tell I'll want better quality. I don't want to drop a bunch of cash till I get a sense of what kind of draw I'll like.

Thanks again. I look forward to meeting up at some point!

Welcome, Jeremiah. And keep me posted too. So far I've had all my razors honed by Mark "mycarver" in Pennsylvania or Lynn Abrams at SRD.

Can’t go wrong with SRD strops, the leather is replicable for just a few bucks. Most new guys nick them learning.

It takes a while to get stropping down to where you are improving an edge consistently. And you can try different leathers and finishes.
