Welcome to the forum. Very nice to get a father and son membership. We have quite a few Colorado members. We have more than a few knife maker's as well. You will find straight razor honing and knife honing to be different in several ways.

I just got my father a wet shaving kit and been chatting quite a bit about soaps and blades. Plus a person you can pass off soaps and aftershaves!

Razor will require more patience and stones to develop the edge for a razor without the bevel set.

    Welcome and best of luck.

    Welcome to SRP!
If you haven't done so yet, read the Beginner's Section in the Library. It will answer a lot of your questions.
Definitely take gssixguns advice and try to make that meeting it will help more than reading will.

Feel free to ask us any questions that you have, we are here to help.

Welcome aboard! And I hope you enjoy this age old sport!

You are confident in your ability to "sharpen things", and that in itself isn't a bad thing. But you will have to excuse us in this regard, as we have seen this same scenario play out time & time again. Sometimes, despite our best collective efforts, it becomes much like a train wreck that you can do nothing about. And then a person just starting out will throw in the towel. So, I would like to clear the air .

Miscommunications & assumptions lead to misunderstandings & mistakes. On a personal note, I've also never been afraid to ask stupid questions !

From the brief interactions thus far, it isn't clear how deep your honing skills have gone. You could try your hand at razor honing. That doesn't mean that you can make a razor "shave-ready". Please don't take this as an attempt to insult you or your abilities, it is in the spirit of helping.

Allow me to point out a few key differences between knife sharpening, and razor honing...

The proper honing angle for a razor is: flat on the stone! Both bevel & spine touching the hone at all times.

Where most knives stop at about 800-1,200 grit (with optional stropping), that is where razors begin (finishing anywhere from 8k to 30k grit).

How sharp you want a knife depends, in the end, how much force (or lack thereof) you want to use when you cut something. The sharpness & polish of a razor's edge is a matter of how comfortable you want your shave to be.
