Howdy Chickenpants!
Glad to see I'm not the only person who says "Howdy!"
Is a shavette your final destination or a weigh station on the road to deciding whether you want to take the leap to a straight razor, stropping and honing?
I think you will soon discover that, here at SRP, you have entered a world where shaving isn't a chore...
It is an ART FORM!Last edited by howdydave; 06-28-2016 at 07:58 PM.

Thanked: 0Already jumped in with both feet :-) just won this ebay auction.
vintage straight razor, ERN, 6/8, Crown & Sword, Solingen, shave-ready | eBay
Whilst it is not as shiny as some of the pictures I have seen amongst the forums, the sellers emphasis on the restoration ,and use of this as working razor rather then something for display convinced me it was worth a punt. I have spoken to the seller who seems to be quite helpful and has provided some guidance on transitioning from the shavette. He suggested I would find the ideal angle to be a little different, but should be able to get a feel for it.
I have a strop on order from amazon, but will probably hold off on honing for a while, the The Invisible Edge do a honing service which I will probably make use of initially.
Any suggestions on how often honing will be required, any clues that a blade needs honing rather than better stropping?

There are whole sections on this site dedicated to honing, what to use, how to do it, how often to do it.
Look especially in the Library under the Maintaining Straight Razors section.

There are two Forums that you should look at, one on Hones in the Shaving Equipment Section and one on Honing in the Maintenance, Repair and Restoration section.
There is also a lot of stuff on YouTube (most of it is by the guys here.)
Take a look at:
Straight Razor Honing for Beginners

With all of the tutorials and information out there, I still bought a cheapie to make all of my mistakes on while I am learning to hone.
I just exposed all of my first time mistakes in the My honing 101 home schooling course thread in the Honing section:
