Welcome to the forum!
I would heed the advice on getting a shave ready razor and getting your current razor honed by a pro. Probably best to get the services on your side of the border, heard some complaints of postage being really high. I would use a new razor to learn with. Many beginners hit the faucet, drop it, mess up on stropping or anything else that might be detrimental to the razor (speaking from experience here). Hands on teaching will also reduce the learning cure dramatically.
