Thanked: 0Hello from Western Kentucky
[I]My name is Dean and I am just getting into using a straight razor. I have always used a Schick Quattro (I know, shame on me) and I am waiting on my first straight razor to arrive by mail. I am excited to try this new shaving method and may need to ask some questions. I look forward to regularly viewing this site. I would like to have a mentor, if one is available, that I could contact and get personal advice from someone who is already experienced.

A good place to start is to go to the Library section. Many, many of your questions have already been answered and cataloged along with useful articles and videos. You might want to specify what city or town you are in in Kentucky since we have members everywhere. A Kentucky member very well could make their presence known so that you could have a one on one session or two to get you up and running. I just looked and found currently active DennisBarberShop, huntergreenbro (Paducah) and LawsonStone (central KY). THey have been active within the last three months. You might want to check them out in the membership section and PM if any are close to you. Also, to us, there are no questions we don't try to answer.
Before I forget, welcome to SRP!"The sharpening stones from time to time provide officers with gasoline."

I saw your "user-experience" request above. The thing I've always heard for new stroppers, is to practice with a butter knife before putting your straight to the leather. I didn't do this, but in hindsight wish that I did. You are going to cut your first strop, it's just a question of when and how bad! As to where to buy a strop, check the ads/links here for Straight Razor Designs, Smallflower and the Classic Edge. Watch "how to strop" videos on YouTube by GeoFatBoy, Lynn Abrahms and a host of others. Welcome to SRP.
