Default Hello from the People's Republik of Kalifornia!

Hello all. I was never one for the "3 blades are better than 2," or "5 blades are better than 4" silliness. So I've been shaving with a safety razor for decades, happily. However, over the past few months I've become intrigued with the idea of switching over to a straight razor. I have purchased nothing to this point, other than the supplies I already use with my safety razor.

I am happy that I stumbled across this forum, and look forward to gaining knowledge from the many experienced individuals on the site. I am hoping to be ready to purchase the necessary equipment to make the switch soon. The only reason I haven't done so to this point, is that I didn't feel I had enough knowledge to make a purchase without possibly throwing my money away on complete junk.

Just by scanning through a few posts, I've already confirmed that I was correct about my lack of knowledge, and am excited to continue on this journey.

Welcome aboard. Take your time. Read much. Watch lots of videos from YouTube. SRP is a good source, but not the only source. Use much discernment. Here's a little something I wrote you might enjoy.

Welcome aboard...read the title of this thread and a Dead Kennedy's song, "California Uber Alles" came to mind.....

Learning to shave with a straight, and all that does with it from soaps to brushes, honing, strops, it's a lot of fun, a thoroughly enjoying hobby that engages the mind, and brings a little peace and quiet to the day. Allows one to remember to slow down and smell the lather, and eventually you'll look forward to your shave.

Hi and welcome aboard. Hopefully you are already using a soap and brush so a razor and strop will see you started. Check for local members. One on one will cut the learning curve significantly and they can help make sure you get the right equipment. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask

Yes, I'm all set when it comes to the brush & soap. The next step for me would be buying a razor & strop as you said. I'm just waiting until I feel comfortable enough in my knowledge to make that purchase without throwing my money away on junk.

First, Welcome to the forum! I assure you there is nothing like a straight razor shave once you get it down!
Second, to adress your issue, There are plenty of reliable suppliers in the classifieds, and Whippeddog.com is where I purchased my first razor, the razors from there come shave ready for real. If you buy something on ebay, or an antique store etc. do yourself a favor and send it to someone in the member services classified to get honed http://straightrazorpalace.com/class...wcat.php?cat=4 Again welcome and good luck!

Are you looking new or vintage. For vintage check out the classifieds most will come shave ready. Site sponsors are also a good buy for shave ready and can get razor and strop deals. I know SRD is recommended a lot but it is good products and prices with proven service. I have used them twice so have no problem with recommending them. Whipped dog does do shave ready cheap razors but I believe that you get a better deal and razors watching the classifieds. Good luck
