Thanked: 0Hello from south Louisiana
How y'all are? I have been looking around at making my own hanging strop and I have always been interested in shaving with a straight razor probably because I have always been interested in knives of all kinds. I'm a edc nut and a sharpening enthusiast.

Welcome to the SRP forum ! What hones do you have available? Many of us began honing our own razors due to previous interest in knives. But honing a straight razor is a horse of another color. Please become familiar with the hones and honing sections as well as the library. And yes,you will probably cut or nick your first strop.

Thanked: 0That is why I bought a cheap strip of leather to learn on. But I am far more interested in making and assembling my own strop than buying one. The creativity of it all interests me. I'm setting up a professional sharpening business and the science of stropping and honing is what has drawn me here.

Welcome to SRP. When it comes to honing, there are many paths to the same destination. I have watched honing videos from many different guys and have seen many different approaches. Some use tape, some only use natural stones...well you get the idea. I watch and respect their talent, never thinking "he's doing it wrong". I just take what I think might work for me and try to apply it to my own honing regimen. Enjoy the journey.

First off, welcome!
The fastest way to obtaining good edges is to master synthetic stones and shaving with the edges you hone. It is advised to get a professionally honed blade in the beginning, so you have a good baseline to start with.

Hi and welcome. As said a benchmark will help you a lot. It will let you know what level of keenness you need. Shaving will help you get it smooth as well. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask
