    Default Hello

Hello. I'm a knife sharpener working in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, in the UK. I'm an old fart with the usual habits and behaviors. I do not use a straight razor but need to learn how to sharpen them because this town is full of people that do - it's that kinda town. I am friendly, stupid, frequently rude but do my best not to be offensive. I do swear quite a lot and once got sacked for it when I was working in the united states, where apparently they don't. I have a pet cat, it doesn't shave either but is nervous about the idea that I may need to be testing out razors in the near future and have only a limited amount of my own fur. I like to carve designs on sticks. I like cooking and eating. I like gardening. i do not like intolerance, racism and people who are unwilling to listen or learn. Stupid, I have no problem with but ignorance is curable if you seek treatment. People who won't get treated (i.e. won't listen and learn) I regard as the equivalent of people who don't get immunized against German measles: they are a danger to the rest of the herd.

My username "mitnageek" seemed like a good idea when i was 12. I've sort of grown into it.

    Welcome to SRP!

Read everything in the SRP library. Twice. Everything you need to know is in there.

Sharpening knifes and straight razors are a different kettle of fish and if your not going to test shave them you could potentially uspset a customer if you intend to offer a honing service.

MarkBigNoseKelly - Thanks! I'm reading my way through now. I had someone ask me "do I sharpen ..." and I've said "no but i will in a week". I'm starting to think the learning curve might be just a wee wee bit shallower than that The knife sharpener forums tend to say "sharp is sharp" and I had feeling there might be a little more to it than that, which is why I came here. So glad I did.

I think that if I'm going to offer this as a service I'm going to need to start shaving 'properly' myself. Well ... just shaving at all might be a start

Testing *is* going to be critical and I can't shave myself with someone else's razor because [a million obvious reasons] so any tips you have beyond what I might find in the library would be gratefully received.

    Thanks for taking an interest.

Addison - I'm usually more restrained in written media ... but like I said above, my understanding of what's offensive and an american (USA) understanding don't always overlap. Still, I'm here to learn, so bring it on admins!

A very warm welcome to you. Get some Barbicide (UK Amazon has it), you're going to need it. There's really no test like the shave test, I'm afraid.
As the time passes, so we learn.
