Thanked: 0Newbie from NC
Been DE shaving for about a year. I was kinda nervous when I started doing that and get great shaves now. Figured I'd go for the best and try straight razor shaving. Pulled the trigger on a Gold Dollar kit, should be here soon. Hope you don't see a guy walking around with his face shaved off any time soon.

hope you find it better , but in the hands of a guy who can shave with a De your not going to see much of a difference. and in the beginning not even close. but it is fun and I like the experience. now as for getting a great shave from this GD kit ,,, good luck cause it really is a low grade razor, find some one who is willing to work on it to get it to shave for you. cause until its been in the hands of a good hone guy your in for an even more disappointing shave Tc

Thanked: 0The Gold Dollar kit I got says I get free lifetime sharpening (just pay shipping), so send it back in for sharpening before I even use it?

It might spend more time in the post than the bathroom.
Welcome to srd & good luck with learning to straight shave! It really is a great way to relax & get your mind ready to face the day. I wouldn't sweat the gold dollar too much. They're notorious for not holding a good edge very long among other things, but eventually you'll end up with at least 2 or 3 razors anyway, so no biggie. I thought I had a lot of razors until some of the other members here put up pics of their own collections. Considering the place you bought it offers free lifetime sharpening, I'd guess it probably has been honed already. But like onimaru said it wouldn't hurt to check the fine print on their website or shoot them an email to make sure.
At any rate, the first time shaving with a straight is usually not that great. It takes a little time to get the angle & pressure down pat. Having used a de you'll likely not have much trouble keeping the pressure to a bare minimum and that's half the battle.Last edited by KenWeir; 12-24-2016 at 08:31 AM. Reason: Dyac

Hi and welcome. There is a great deal of debate around gold dollar razors. Some can be fixed and honed a hold a reasonable edge. Some cant. They are hit and miss so not recommended for starters as it adds the variable of is it you or your razor. Good luck and any questions be sure to ask the folks here are helpful and only want to see you succeed.
