Thanked: 0New Guy from West Virginia
Hello Everyone,
New guy here and I've just purchased my first razor from the classified section of this forum. I've never used a straight razor before, but I am looking forward to the experience. Over the last two years I have progressively moved toward this day by first ditching my electric razor for a cartridge. Then, I moved to a safety razor that I have been using for about nine months now. With every change, I have been more and more satisfied with the experience and the outcomes of my shaves.
As a result of talking about my interest in getting a straight razor, for Christmas this year I got a razor. Unfortunately it turned out to be a dud (Master USA). I don't have the heart to tell my family, so I will put it on the shelf and call it the beginning of my collection. I'm excited to try the one I purchased here from member rodb. It’s a Jack Knife Ben "Melba" 5/8".

Welcome aboard, sexton! I'm sure you'll enjoy the new razor. Have you settled on a strop? Dunno if you've read about this yet or not, but it's often recommended for new shavers to not strop their razor before the first shave. There's an awful lot to learn all at once and doing that will eliminate the risk of hurting the razor with improper stropping technique. It lets you know you're starting with a good edge. After that stropping will be required between every shave. Some of us do it only before a shave, some only after, and some do it both before and after every shave. It's really up to you as long as it gets done.

Welcome to SRP. Read the library a bunch. It will really help. When I look back on my "new guy" phase, that is the one piece of advice I would have given myself.
