Thanked: 0Hi there from Boston
Hi there. I toyed with the idea of going to a straight razor about five or six years ago, but the first or second time through I got a nice little cut on my upper cheek and stopped. Considering going back to it mainly so I can more easily work around the curve on my beard. I may try to track down a class if one exists, because I learn best by seeing and doing, not by reading a manual or watching a video. Have a good one.

Hello wicked78. Happy New Year and welcome to SRP!
Nice to see that you are giving straight razor shaving another go.
I'm from Massachusetts too. About 25 miles west of Worcester.
My suggestions are to watch shaving video's, especially Lynn's. Learn what shaving strokes feel comfortable to you by practicing with a butter knife. Read everything you can here on the forum. Get involved and ask questions. Take your time when shaving. Be deliberate and stay in your comfort zone. Stick with it and in no time you'll be shaving like an old pro.
Any specific questions don't hesitate to P.M. me.
Good luck!

Wicked78 definitely worth the time and effort to get back into it. There are lots of great videos out there. Ensure your razor is shave ready.
One of the best pieces of advice I was given was to just shave small areas until I got really comfortable with the blade and then that part of my face. Then slowly do more and more giving yourself time to adjust and get the feel of the blade and your face.

One one one help is available, look for mentors in your area, and I think Pete has already posted in this thread he can help you. And a meet up with someone is the best learning you can get. Tc

Welcome wicked78, good to have you here. You can surely connect with members and learn a lot from them. Videos and reading lots of threads will help too. If you stick with it you will see the rewards. Several years ago I contacted a barber school in NH and they let me sit in on the day they were doing a lesson on straight razor shaving. The owner even took the time to show me a few things with one of my razors and a hone. I stuck around after for a shave and haircut. Doesn't hurt to call places and ask. Point is, reach out to people and you will get what you need. Eventually down the road someday, someone may be reaching out to you for help.

Thanked: 0Thank you for the welcomes, and thanks for the tip on the butter knife! I don't know how much I'll be checking in here, but will do so whenever time allows. I'd love to join a Boston area meetup if one is held.

Welcome wicked - there are a few of us in the area. We may have a potential meetup this summer if Utopian is still willing. Several of us in the area are honing and/or restoring and are interested in some one on one time with an experienced honer. Nothing like checking the results of a hone with a good shave - and any of us would be willing to help out with some of our techniques.
Welcome to the forum.
