Default New person introduction of Bob Warner

    Hello all,

I just signed up on this forum and thought I might introduce myself. I am Bob Warner and I have been making custom knives for about 25 years. I live in a small town called Royse City just east of Dallas, Texas.

I decided to give the straight razor a shot and came to learn a little about them. The actual making of the razor is probably already in my wheel house but the setting of the edge and sharpening will be different than knives I am sure.

I also need to learn the terms I am unfamiliar with like 8/8 which I assume is the height of the blade in eighths. So a tall blade might be 9/8, correct?

I will also need to learn the likes and dislikes of razor users and collectors so I can make razors people would like.

Here are a couple of the knives I have made in the past. These are not for sale, just things I've made. Sorry for the large photos, I looked in the policy and did not see any reference to photo size.

Those are some beautiful knives. The photo size is just fine.

If for some reason you decide to sell your products and/or advertise make sure you read the policy we have in regard to vendors. It does not hurt to ask first if you have questions.

Thank you, at this time I do not plan to sell but later you never know. Got to get something I like enough to sell first.

Got a lot of searching to do to find out about edge geometry and sharpening. Never had a straight razor, never had a razor after the military. Probably cut my throat if I did.
    Thanks,

    Bob

    Thank you Dieseld.

That third knife was made of damascus of mine and made to look like a railroad spike knife. That p[hoto was in Knives Illustrated twice in a column I used to write for them.

This is the first step in making a SR

Without the hands on knowledge of how a SR actually functions what we see way too often is non functional

Here is a free hint STROPPING is important you do it before every shave, and if the razor doesn't function for it, regardless of how pretty it is or how fancy the steel is the razor is just a wall hanger
The way the razor rotates in the fingers while stropping is by far the biggest fail I find with Custom Razors...

    KISS especially with the steel

Hello Bob and welcome to SRP!
Those are some fine knives. I particularly like the damascus spike.
If you haven't seen it yet, there is an upcoming meet in Burkburnett Texas in February.
The focus of this is forging and making straight razor blades.
Some of the top guys in the country will be there. Our Administrator, Bruno is also attending. He is the owner of Snail Forge in Belgium.
If you ever wanted to know anything about razor bladesmithing this is the place to be.
    Here's a link to the thread :http://straightrazorpalace.com/get-t...op-2017-a.html
I think even a day spent there would be of great help.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
    Good luck!

    Thanks everyone.

Is there an admission to the Burkburnett meet? I'm close enough to drive for the day and can't spend more than a day away due to obligations but would like to go one day at least. Is there a schedule of events? I would like to go during the post heat treat part of a build for the edge work mainly.

Will there be vendors there selling materials and sharpening items?

Sounds like a lot of fun. I had a hammer-in a few years ago and had a knife supply vendor here. Had BBQ, made damascus (love having a press) and showed people how to grind knives. That's a lot of fun.

Pete thanks for the heads up.
