Hi and welcome. Try finding a local mentor for honing lessons. There are a lot of people willing to help and it will save a lot of frustration and wasted metal

The gold dollar will take a shaving edge but not when you receive it out of the box. The shoulder needs to be ground down so it does not impede being put on a hone. Just one remark about the list here above: Solingen is not a Company, it is a German city that counted hundreds companies of cutlery and still counts a dozen of them. Henkels, DOVO, PUMA ... are located in Solingen!
