"Don't shave the face...shave the cream.."

That was Master Jedi stuff right there. Just what I needed to hear. Gave me the confidence for a full shave with the shavette. Still have a long path ahead, but I feel like a took a big leap today. Face is in much better shape. Thank you.

The blades you are using on your shavette might not be the best for you. Just like a safety razor, some blades work for you, some blades don't.
    And use very little pressure.

For the razors in the classifieds here, they are all good and if listed as shave ready they really are shave ready.
Recall that the shavette blades are half a DE blade but without the support and guide of the mechanics
built into a DE razor. They work with a light near expert touch but in my opinion a decent DE is
a much better choice than the shavette.

Any shave can be improved with good face and whisker preparation.
A good LATHERIN will make any razor shave better even the quatro things.

What he said! There are so many names and makes of razors you will be hearing names for years to come that you haven't herd of. At least that what I tell myself. If its sold here you got a 99% chance its a decent razor. And if stated shave ready, it is. And if you keep your eyes open on the B/S/T you can find 3 or 4 razors for the price you paid for your new one. I recently bought one for 20 bucks shipped and shave ready. Cant beat that!

Read the library on learning to shave and on Razors. There is a list of what to buy and what not to buy. Practice and practice some more. It takes time to get that perfect shave. After 3 or 4 months you will find its not a difficult thing to do at all and you will laugh at yourself thinking about the first time you put the blade to your face and was scared of cutting your own throat. It happens. You will give yourself a few nicks but I bet it wont be as bad as the Shavette.

    Good luck!

I agree with others as stated above. Buy a shave ready from the classifieds here on SRP, you should be able to get one that is 'truly' shave ready, by peeps that actually shave with a SR vs a guy behind the counter.

As you'll learn, SR shaving is ALL about the angle of the blade. Take your time, ask questions and you'll be walking in tall cotton before you know it.

    Welcome to SRP.

Hi and welcome. Pressure when shaving is a killer in the beginning. Just enough to keep contact. There are so many vintage blades from small makers or generic blades but you rarely find a dud. Get s round nose 5/8 or 6/8 and you are on the right track. Unsure still just ask and you will receive advice aimed to get you shaving the best way. Good luck

If you have not done so, go to youtube and look for Lynn Abrams' shaving videos.

    Welcome!

What the others have said is pretty good, and I'll just add my 2 cents as a fellow n00b and tell you why you should buy a cheap shave-ready vintage.

I purchased a brand new shave-ready Dovo from a reputed seller (ClassicEdge) because I really didn't know about this amazing thing: barbicide.
Generally, the guys who sell on this forum will disinfect the blade after shave testing with this amazing product. It kills EVERYTHING on the blade. So you need not be afraid of getting HIV or any other nasty infection from your razor.

Makes a vintage much more interesting!

Also, I broke the scales on my brand new Dovo. Possibly because I was putting too much force on them when stropping and cleaning (though I have doubts about that theory, that's a possibility).
At ~140$, that's infuriating. Had I paid <40$ for my razor, that'd have been much less so.
