Thanked: 1Newbie
I just joined the team with a TI AOS black plastic scales. Gotta get it shave ready and picking up my great grandfathers barber strop from my dad in a few days. Found an ever ready pure badger brush in awesome shape at a antique shop for $10. I'm super stoked!

Welcome aboard SRP. Sounds like you have a good start but where are the pictures? No pics, it didn't happen. If you have any questions ask away the guys here are great and are always ready to lend a hand.

Your strop may have to be cleaned and reconditioned, before you use it. Any foreign material in the webbing, or leather, can cause detrimental damage to the edge of the razor. FYI.
IT DEPENDS ON THE CONDITION OF THE STROP.
Its why pics are so valuable, we can help guide you, if we know what were working with.
BTW
Youll want to give that brush a few scrubbins in a antibacterial soap before using it as wellLast edited by outback; 06-08-2017 at 06:32 PM.

Thanked: 634The Strop alone may not be enough to get it shave ready. Depending on where you bought it it may just have a factory edge. You may need to send it out for professional honeing. Give your location. There may be a member near you that does honeing.

Congrats and welcome to SRP!
In particular, you must be stoked to be able to have your great grandfather's strop. Hopefully it will still be in serviceable condition, or at least brought back to life. As suggested, pics would be a big help in terms of giving advice.
Please don't make the mistake I did when starting out, and fail to send your razor out for professional honing to start with. I tried honing my own from the start and had an absolutely miserable experience until a proper edge was put on the thing! The difference in shaving experience was like night and day, and when I started honing myself, I had an idea of what to aim for.
Good luck
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Welcome to SRP!
I would suggest you get a different strop to learn on than your great grandfathers. It is really easy to destroy a strop when you are learning this art and it would be a shame to destroy a priceless heirloom.
Definitely get the razor professionally honed. AOS claims that the razors are shave ready, but they are not.
And add your location to your profile. Hopefully someone is nearby that can help you in person.
