    Wink Newbie from Florida

Hello everyone and HAPPY FATHERS DAY to whom it applies! My name is Louie Entrialgo. I live in West Palm Beach, Florida. I have only been Str8 shaving for about 6 months and I also have been reading this forum since then. I figured it was time to join after a little self familiarization of this site. Now that I am getting a little more aware of the process, I have recently purchased a set of Naniwa stones to begin the honing learning experience. I have tried it twice now with not that great of results, but I love every aspect of str8 shaving. So I'll keep practicing. One thing about South Florida is there doesn't seem to be too many Straight razor places that I can visit or get mentoring from. So that's why I'm here. Thank you

    Welcome Louie.
You are still a novice at shaving. I recommend you continue to learn to shave first. Once you get it down then try to learn to hone. Honeing a razor is nothing like a knife. If you just want the stone for touch up it would help to know how the razor was originally honed. With or without tape as it will affect the bevel if you do not hone the same method.

If you have a good leather and linen Strop I suggest a trip to The Art of Shaving to pick up a tube of Theirs Issard strop paste. Use it on the linen. Strop on linen first and finish on leather. Your edge should last a considerable amount of time.

I use it and touch up my razors once a year. I have honed many razors for The Art of Shaving in Boca Town Center and tell all my customers this method. It means less customers for me but happy customers.

I don't drive too far due to a bad back but you can ask questions anytime. Glad to help.

    Good luck.

    Welcome aboard, Loudog.
Honing has an extensive learning curve when it comes to razors. I've honed a dizzying array of tools, knives, axes, ice auger blades, ect., and nothing compares to honing razors.
I've spent days of hours, working through pits n chips, removing frowns, and dealing with geometry issues on old vintage blades, just to set a bevel. Then more time progressing to a final finish, and then the most important part... Stropping. Here's where the edge really stops. Bad stropping....start over at the stones.!!

Welcome to SRP, Louie. It's very difficult to learning honing right out of the gate unless you get some one-on-one mentoring from someone who really knows what they are doing. Get the stropping and shave basics down first, and you will be better off in the long run.

Hi and welcome aboard. Hope you have a good blade to learn on. A razor with issues isn't a blade to start with. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask
