Thread: Hello from Bangladesh

Hello Everyone!

Just joined SRP today! Been hanging around and feeding off information for a couple of months. Finally decided to join and contribute in any humble way I can.

I started off with wet shaving with the Parker 99R shave set a couple of months back…..and after a couple of nicks and bruises ….I got the best shave of my life.

Last month I decided to take up the notch a bit higher and made up my mind to learn the mystic art of straight razor shaving. After watching hours of youtube vdos and digging through various websites decided to buy my first straight.

The trouble is, good quality straight razors aren’t available in Bangladesh. After failing to find one in the local markets, I got a Dovo Silver Prima Steel off amazon – and that through someone traveling from US.

I’m still in the infancy stage, been shaving my right cheek with my dormant hand- doing the rest with my Parker. Think I’ll take it easy for a while…

Taking your time is the way to go.

Are you sure your razor is truly shave ready and do you have a strop?

A Dovo will shave right out of the box, but the edge is not as refined as it could be by a good stretch so it might be worth looking for someone to hone it up for you.

I too came from DE shaving and thought I knew what a light touch was, I was wrong. You need no pressure when using a straight. You will find you get a much closer shave with no pressure than you do with it.

To be honest I am not quite sure if it's shave ready. But as you said it shaves right out of the box.

Yes, I do have a parker 3"x27" strop. I did 30 laps on the canvas and about 50 on the leather.

Regarding honing- we don't have any SR specialist here. We do have for knives and others but I wouldn't trust them with my prized SR.

I will probably have to do it myself after watching vdos. Someone is bring me a Norton 4k/8k in a couple of months time. Do you think that the blade may ruin in a novice's hands?

It is quite possible that you may dull the edge. Either by shaving technique or poor stropping. Both of these things will come with time so it's nothing to worry about.

When I started out I actually dropped my first razor whilst stropping and chipped the edge. So these things definitely happen. Whilst you may not have people where you are there are many that will do the work for you and ship worldwide. Do an internet search and you are sure to find something.

I am sure if you get the bug you will end up buying other razors in the future and having a back up razor to use whilst one is out being honed is a good idea too. Once funds allow of course.

Without going into further details let me tell you sending a SR though shipping is not an option here. I found one honing service in Thailand, will check them out in my next trip.

BTW after taking the razor out of the box, and having given it a few laps on my strop I did the arm hair cutting test- and it passed with the beautiful "ting ting" sound! Does that count as shave ready?

I can't get any of my razors to pass the arm hair test. That's because I have the arm hair of a Disney princess

If you are getting comfortable shaves I wouldn't worry too much. Once you get into it you will be able to tell the difference between a good edge and one that is just OK.

You can search the members here maybe there is someone closer to your home that could offer some help. If the honing service in Thailand will give you a lesson or two whilst they are honing your razor that would be a great help for you too.

No worries on the non-dominant hand. Just slow and easy my friend.
Some people just can't use that hand and learn with their dominant one. But I highly suggest trying to use both.
