Thanked: 2New Member from Hartford, Ct area
Hi , I have been gifted a straight razor which needs a decent amount of tlc ( It has some surface rust and possible pitting.) I have never used a straight razor but looking forward to it. I will be delving through the forums to find the best way to rejuvenate this razor. The blade is Manufactured by, D C Halsted, Shefield. The scales appear to be yellow horn ( I have done a little reading so far.) They have etched in them " The Old English Razor" I would gladly upload a picture but unsure how to host it etc. Looking forward to restoring and using it. Hope to share my journey in pictures etc.

Great to have you, as stated read, read, read. Then ask questions, this hobby can take very few tools and lots of patience. Great rewards after you get one done though. Best of luck, swing into the workshop and check out all the work going on. Lots to learn there and the library.

That looks like a nice one.
Maybe try some wire wool and WD40 to remove the rust and see what lies beneath.
Could be that's all it needs depending on what you want to achieve.
Sharpening would require some one with experience, there are many here.

Welcome to the forum and to the rabbit hole of straights.
That is a good looking razor and you can't go wrong with Sheffield steel.
I think at this point you should ask yourself what your priority is. By that I mean do you want to shave or do you want to restore it? Maybe you want to do both, but it might be a lot to take in at the beginning. It might be worth having the razor restored and made shave ready by someone with the experience and the equipment required. Then once you have got into the hobby of shaving look round for some old razors to have a crack at restoration.
Whatever you decide, I think that this will be a fine razor to have in any collection.
Take your time and enjoy!Fact: Opinions are not the same as facts... Well, that's my opinion anyway

Welcome to SRP.
Yep, as was stated, start with some steal wool and wd-40 or metal polish and spend a couple hours cleaning. Being careful of the edge. You will find that a dull razor is as sharp as a knife the hard way and thats no fun.
A proper honing, not done by yourself is best when starting out. This way any issues you have with shaving will not be the blade. You will need a strop but dont spend a lot as you will cut it up. It just happens when your new to this hobby.
Read as much as possible in the library and watch some vids to learn basics. And take you time. Slow and easy. Enjoy the ride. It's just Sharpening, right?
