Howdy from Texas
Howdy guys,
Checking in from gulf cost of Texas by way of Galveston Island. Getting back into wet shaving after a few years. My first blade was a cheap Pakistani blade I bought a few years ago and after a brutal learning curve and the purchase of a hone got a few good shaves out of the blade for a few months before it ceased to hold an edge. I rock a shaved head and handlebar mustache. Although still never got the nerve to go over the head with the straight razor. So now I am ready to kick the disposable habit again and am about to buy my first quality razor. I want to go with spike point or Spanish point because of the mustache. The first blade was rounded and I found it harder to use around the stache. I have narrowed it down to the Dovo ebony spike or the Boker Edelweiss. My real question is about suppliers however. I am looking for opinions on either Knifecenter.com or Straight razor designs. I have found them on both sites, however I do like that SRD offers them honed. Is that worth the higher price and are they a better company? Any advice on this first purchase would be much appreciated. Also any other advice on other models or vendors would be cool. Thanks all

I would say that for a beginner getting a honed razor is a must. That said it seems that you do have some experience honing. Only you know the level of that skill and it all depends on how much you want to gamble it on a quality blade.
Personally I hone my own razors, but I always buy new ones shave ready. That way I only ever have to touch them up rather than bevel set first.
Good luck whichever way you decide to go you will be happy with either of those razors.Fact: Opinions are not the same as facts... Well, that's my opinion anyway

Welcome to srp. The man who started this site (lynn abrams) is an owner of srd. If your going to buy new id say buy from srd. As said, a realy shave ready blade is needed for a beginner. And you will find that at srd. Or if you buy used off the b/s/t thread here. Lots can be found here and for a much lesser cost. And from this forum they will also be shave ready.
Good luck and be sure to read stuff in our library. Lots of great info for someone starting out. It's just Sharpening, right?

Welcome to SRP! I’ll second what has already been said. Go with SRD if you are planning to buy a new razor, or maybe consider a vintage blade from B/S/T here that you can be fairly confident will be honed up for you and shave-ready. I just checked B/S/T, and there are a couple of great vintage blades available right now.
Enjoy your straight razor journey!--Mark

Welcome to SRP! As before mentioned a shave ready razor is a must for beginners. Even if you have some honing experience a shave ready razor will give you a benchmark as to what a truly shave ready razor is. I would go with SRD as their razors are honed by a pro, by someone who shaves with a straight razor and knows what shave ready really is. Factory honed edges may shave but would give a comfortable shave. Good luck on your straight razor journey!
