Thread: New guy intro

Hi all. New to straight razor shaving. Waiting on vintage razor I bought from Griffiths Shaving and Poor Mans strop from Whipped Dog. Looking forward to any and all advice. Been DE shaving for about four years now, tried a shavette and got to where I don't cut myself, and have taken the plunge.

If you can shave ok with a Shavette you should be good with the real thing. If I remember right the angle on a real straight is lower.

You should probably look at getting a +8k hone or CrOx pasted paddle for edge maintaining on a shave ready razor. If you are looking at antique store/ebay restoring you will need more hones (1k,4k,8k or similar to start with)

Hello and welcome, you are well on your way it sounds like. Rob is correct, the straight razor uses less of an angle typically than the shavette. I feel a straight razor is much more forgiving than the shavette. Congrats on your purchases and ask anything you are unsure of there are lots of great guys on here willing to help.

Welcome aboard, your about to have the most enjoyable shave yet, since you've got the shavette down pat.
You should have at least two razors, unless you are proficient at honing and stropping. Practice honing on a ol leather belt, with a butter knife to obtain the mechanics of it.
